Through the ‘Tour of the Universe’ scheme school children are taken on a journey from the Earth through the solar system, out to the Milky Way and beyond. Their tour guide for this journey is Dr Maggie Aderin who is a professional scientist with a passion for explaining science to the public.

To simulate the space travel Maggie projects onto a large screen a graphics package that enables dynamic views of space and the planets and other celestial bodies to be viewed up close and personal. As the children fly past the celestial bodies, Maggie will give details on the objects observed and undertake demonstrations with the audience to highlight the concepts discussed.

The tours are all carefully tailored for different age groups and links have been formed with science teachers to ensure that each of the tours is reaching it target audience. “We, as scientists, have a duty to make science accessible to the public, if ideas are complex we need to work out ways to get the message across. If we fail at this, we do it to our own detriment”. The tours complement and reinforce many of the astronomy and science concepts of keystages 1 to 4. A tour can last from 30minutes to one hour, and several tours can be given in succession to different classes in a single afternoon.

The scheme is run by the Guilford based company Science Innovation. It is totally free to schools, as it is partially funding by PPARC, (the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council) who have a strong commitment to the public’s understanding of the science, and have funded many local projects in aid of this.
